Important Considerations for Online Therapy
Online therapy can help clients to effectively achieve their therapeutic goals. It is important however that we recognise the differences between face-to-face and online therapy and the advantages of each specific format.
Sessions
Online sessions are conducted on Zoom, which is considered one of the safest online platforms, recommended by professional insurers and frequently used in psychotherapy. Prior to the start of each session, an email with the link and login details for the session is sent to the client. This link can be accessed even when the client does not have zoom installed in their device. Each session usually lasts 50 to 60 minutes.
Security and Confidentiality
This is of paramount importance. Before each session, it is advised that clients carefully consider 1) closing all internet browsers on the device that is used for the session and moving all other devices away from the immediate vicinity. 2) Attending sessions in a private room, behind closed doors, alone and without interruptions. 3) If possible, using a headset can add privacy. 4) Giving attention to the position of the screen to avoid being seen by others, for instance through a window. 5) Although it is acceptable to have a pet within the room, this may become distracting during the session.
Exceptions to Online Therapy
Some cases may not be suitable for online therapy. Risk assessment scales may also be used in particular cases and this is to ensure the client’s safety in the therapeutic process. Volunteering information that can help the assessment of any individual circumstances is encouraged.
Emergencies
In the unlikely event of a crisis, it may be necessary to contact a next of kin or the emergency services. It is important to have all the necessary contact details, including those for local emergency services.
Presentation
As in face-to-face, it is expected that the clients present appropriately, and minimise the levels of noise, the position of the camera and the lighting in your room. Specific guidelines with further details for online therapy will be discussed when engaging in this format.
